WHEN GOD MADE YOU
by Matthew Paul Turner
Illustrated by David Catrow
ages 3 to 7
YOU, you... God thinks about you.
God was thinking of you long before your debut.
From early on, children are looking to discover their place in the world and longing to understand how their personalities, traits, and talents fit in. The assurance that they are deeply loved and a unique creation in our big universe is certain to help them spread their wings and fly.
Through playful, charming rhyme and vivid, fantastical illustrations, When God Made You inspires young readers to learn about their own special gifts and how they fit into God's divine plan as they grow, explore, and begin to create for themselves.
'Cause when God made YOU, somehow God knew
That the world needed someone exactly like you!

Through a whirlwind of colors and rhyme, this book embraces the beauty of life, the joy of individuality and the treasure known as diversity.
The cover already pulls into the fitting atmosphere with it's clear, religious title and the glorious freedom as the little girl falls through a sky of colors. Warm thoughts and feelings are immediately brought to the forefront of the mind and hold on the entire way through.
The message is clear: you are precious. It's a necessary statement kids can never get enough of or hear too much about. The rhyming text brings this across on every page in different ways, allowing the reader/listener to be enveloped by the encouraging message again and again. The heavily religious tone encourages without weighing down. The vocabulary is a little advanced for younger listeners and a few words will need explanation even for older ones. The wording and rhymes are beautiful, but sometimes, the flow stumbles a little.
Alone the illustrations make this book a sheer joy to read. Vivid colors invite to imagination and fantasy. The characters are lovingly depicted and offer a wonderful glance into the glorious diversity of life, all on their own. It's easy to flip through the pages again and again just to get lost in the artwork.
Summed up, this is a lovely book with a beautiful message. The text and length lean more to ages 4+ and up. The text is fine, but it's the illustrations which bring the book to life and create a fantastic, warming journey.
I received this book from Blogging for Books and thoroughly enjoyed the chance to dive into these pages.
